Kazekage Rescue Arc

The opening chapter of Naruto Shippuden set after the two-and-a-half-year time jump. Witness Naruto's return and the high-stakes mission to save the newly appointed Fifth Kazekage from the Akatsuki.

The Return & Crisis

Following intense training with Jiraiya, Naruto returns to the Hidden Leaf only to discover that Gaara—now the Fifth Kazekage of the Hidden Sand—has been ambushed and abducted by the Akatsuki. The rogue organization targets Gaara to extract the One-Tailed Beast (Shukaku) sealed within him. Team Kakashi sets out immediately on a high-stakes rescue operation alongside Hidden Sand allies.

How Gaara Was Captured

In a fierce aerial battle defending his village, Gaara managed to crush Deidara's left arm. In retaliation, Deidara launched a devastating C3 explosive bomb targeted directly at the settlement. Gaara used almost all his remaining chakra to shield his people with a giant sand barrier. Exhausted, he fell victim to Deidara's hidden clay explosives secretly mixed into his personal sand supply, resulting in his defeat and capture.

The Tailed Beast Extraction

Taken to the Akatsuki's secluded hideout, Gaara was subjected to the Ritual of Sealing. Using the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path (Gedo Mazo), the Akatsuki successfully extracted Shukaku over three days, taking Gaara's life in the process.

The Rescue & Sacrifice

Team Kakashi and Team Guy infiltrated the hideout. While Sakura and Elder Chiyo defeated Sasori in an epic battle, Naruto and Kakashi pursued Deidara to retrieve Gaara's body. Though the extraction was complete, Elder Chiyo performed the ultimate sacrifice—using her forbidden Reanimation Jutsu to trade her life force for Gaara's, resurrecting the young Kazekage.
